BeCytes Biotechnologies is a biotechnological company that offers products and services (CRO) based on tissue procurement, cell isolation and cell solutions for in vitro models for research purposes. ​

Their main focus is the isolation and full characterisation of primary human and animal hepatic and skin cells, as well as providing different tissue explants (pathological and healthy donors).

BeCytes Biotechnologies offers an extensive portfolio of cryopreserved human and animal liver cells, including plateable and suspension hepatocytes, stellates, Kupffers, liver sinusoidal endothelial cells and sub-cellular liver fractions.

Primary Human Hepatocytes

BeCytes Biotechnologies hold a large stock of hepatocytes and perform new isolations every month of human hepatocytes available in 3 different formats: cryopreserved plated, cryopreserved in suspension, cryopreserved plateable.

Hepatocytes in suspension are cultured in suspension and mostly, they are not able to form a confluent monolayer on collagen-coated plates which is advantageous for certain research scenarios.

The most accurate representation of in vivo cellular function and characteristics can be achieved with plateable hepatocytes. BeCytes Biotechnologies cryopreserved human plateable hepatocytes are qualified by their ability to maintain a confluent monolayer (85% confluency) for at least five days.

Their human hepatocytes maintain morphology and function over long periods, and are supplied with:

Primary Animal Hepatocytes and Sub-Cellular Liver Fractions

BeCytes Biotechnologies also provides cryopreserved animal hepatocytes which are produced with the same methodology used in the isolation of human hepatocytes.

Primary Animal Hepatocytes and Sub-cellular liver fractions (Microsomes, Cytosol and S9 fraction) are model systems often used for a variety of in vitro screenings and analyses before clinical studies in human and animal health & environmental toxicology.

While animal hepatocytes in suspension are important for short-term metabolism studies, plated animal hepatocytes are perfect for the studies of long-term metabolism or evaluation of drug candidates to investigate drug-drug interactions.

BeCytes' dog beagle, monkey cynomolgus, rat and minipig hepatocytes are model systems frequently used in vitro screening methods. They closely match the physiology in vivo and contribute to the identification of safety issues early in the drug development pipeline.

Hepatic Non-Parenchymal Cells (NPCs)

Hepatic non-parenchymal cells (NPCs) represent about 30% of the liver and are specialised cells which interact with hepatocytes. NPCs present organotypic hepatocyte-NPC interactions via direct contact or paracrine signalling and forming a functional hepatic unit.

Among their many functions, NPCs play an important role for liver regeneration as well as recovery from inflammatory liver injury and scaring.

Advanced liver models, including those with in vivo-like environments and liver co-cultures, are essential for accurate predictive responses in studying liver physiology/pathology and conducting drug screenings, offering increased sensitivity and the ability to manipulate various conditions and analyse multiple parameters.

Tissue Procurement

BeCytes offers a custom tissue procurement service to acquire samples tailored to unique research requirements. BeCytes Biotechnologies has created a platform capable of coordinating the donation of human tissues and cells for biomedical research purposes, encompassing strong collaborations with national and international procurement centres, biobanks and hospitals that allow them to provide a wide range of tissue samples.

Tissue samples available include skin, lung, intestine, pancreas, kidney, brain, ovarian, liver, and rectal.
