Ferroptosis is a recently discovered form of regulated cell death that is characterised by the accumulation of lipid peroxides and iron-dependent reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells. Proteins involved in Ferroptosis include glutathione-dependent lipid peroxidase (GPX4), the iron transporter transferrin, and the cystine/glutamate antiporter system xc-. Inhibition of any of these proteins leads to the accumulation of lipid peroxides, and the eventual triggering of ferroptosis.
