Atorvastatin sodium, a competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, increases expression of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors on hepatocytes. Atorvastatin sodium pretreatment suppresses aquaporin 4 to attenuate ischemic brain edema.
