Long Description:
Cryptosporidium is a genus of parasitic protozoa that can cause a diarrheal illness known as cryptosporidiosis in humans and animals. It is a waterborne pathogen and is transmitted through the ingestion of infectious oocysts, the dormant and infective stage of the parasite, found in contaminated food and water, or through direct contact with infected individuals or animals. Once ingested, the oocysts release sporozoites that invade the intestinal lining, leading to inflammation and diarrhea. Cryptosporidiosis can be particularly severe in individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or undergoing cancer treatment. The disease is widespread and has been associated with both sporadic cases and outbreaks, especially in settings with inadequate water treatment and sanitation facilities.
