Long Description:
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an enveloped DNA virus that is a member of the herpes virus family and is also known as Human gammaherpesvirus 4. It is one of the most common human viruses, with most people being infected at some point during their lives. EBV is transmitted through saliva, and infections are most common in childhood and adolescence. While many people who are infected with EBV will not experience any symptoms, others may develop infectious mononucleosis (commonly known as "mono" or the "kissing disease"), a condition characterized by fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue. The virus primarily infects B cells and once the initial infection is controlled by the immune system, the virus becomes latent which can lead to a recurrence later in life if the virus is reactivated. EBV has been causally associated with various types of cancer (known collectively as EBV-associated tumors) including Hodgkin?s disease, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and Burkitt?s lymphoma.
