Background:
TOSO/Fas apoptotic inhibitory molecule 3 (FAIM3) was initially identified as an inhibitor for Fas-mediated apoptosis when overexpressed in T cells (1). The molecule has recently been identified as a Fc receptor for IgM (FcuR) both in humans and mice (2,3). FcuR/TOSO/FAIM3 is predominantly expressed in B lymphocyte lineage cells (2,3). In humans, FcuR/TOSO/FAIM3 is also expressed on T cells (2). Chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells are reported to express increased levels of FcuR/TOSO/FAIM3 compared to healthy B cells (4), and that its expression in the leukemia cells is controlled by B-cell receptor signaling (5). These observations may suggest a role for FcuR/TOSO/FAIM3 in BCR signaling and/or B-cell activation.
