Background:
TOSO/Fas apoptotic inhibitory molecule 3 (FAIM3) was initially identified as an inhibitor for Fas-mediated apoptosis when overexpressed in T cells. The molecule has recently been identified as a Fc receptor for IgM (FcuR) both in humans and mice. FcuR (TOSO/FAIM3) is predominantly expressed in B lymphocyte lineage cells. In humans, FcuR is also expressed on T cells. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells are reported to express increased levels of FcuR compared to healthy B cells, and that its expression in the leukemia cells is controlled by B-cell receptor signaling. These observations may suggest a role for FcuR in BCR signaling and/or B-cell activation.
