Background:
Autophagosome, which encloses cytoplasmic materials, is formed by coordinated functions of Atg proteins and fuses with lysosome, leading to degradation of enclosed materials. Atg9 is conserved from yeast to mammal and a sole transmembrane protein among core Atg proteins and functions in autophagosome formation (Young et al. 2006). There are two isoforms in mammals, Atg9A and Atg9B. Atg9A, but not Atg9B, is ubiquitously expressed in mouse tissues (Yamada et al. 2005). Atg9A is required for the initial step of autophagosome formation, but exact function is unclear (Itakura et al. 2012).
