Aripiprazole, a third-generation atypical antipsychotic, is commonly prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. Introduced in the early 21st century, aripiprazole exhibits a distinctive mechanism of action as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, while antagonizing serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. This unique pharmacological profile contributes to its efficacy in balancing dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain, alleviating symptoms associated with various psychiatric conditions. Unlike many antipsychotics, aripiprazole is associated with a lower risk of metabolic side effects.
