Background:
This gene encodes a mitochondrial short-chain
dehydrogenase/reductase, which catalyzes the reduction and
oxidation of retinoids. The encoded enzyme may function in retinoic
acid production and may also protect the mitochondria against
oxidative stress. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have
been described.
